Things To Do in LA?

Post by austin » Mon Jun 02, 2014 9:47 am

Hey TOMB-ers:

I'm going to be in Los Angeles for a few days this summer -- my first time there. Curious if there are any music-related or recording-related things to do there that I shouldn't miss. Are any of the classic/legendary recording studios open for tours? Any other music-related places that are a must-see?

Hi austin,

There is some to do, however most "famous" operating studios only do tours
through organizations like NARAS and their Producer and Engineer Wing.

You can always call / email to find out if they offer tours to regular people (unlikely). The Grammy and AES require membership. It is worth it, IMO, if you are a full time engineer.

Also, through the Audio Engineer Society, you can sometimes get tours of different facilities like movie scoring stages, manufacturer factory tours, etc.

Other than that, if you know owners / musicians / etc, sometimes you may be able to tag along, or get an introduction to a studio.

If you can, definitely go see Capitol Studios:

Most of the other famous studios have closed, except for :

Sunset Sound
The Village Recorders
Ocean Way Hollywood (was the old Bill Putnam studios)
And a handful of others.

Cheers
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.
