Super 70 studio gets discrete Allen & Heath console

Post by supafuzz » Thu Dec 04, 2014 11:44 am

Originally we were going to build a custom console but it grew to epic proportions financially and would have taken more than a year.
We just picked up a 1975 Allen & Heath Mod 2 16 channel 8 bus console.
All discrete, no IC chips, extremely short signal path...
Currently at Matrix Audio Systems in Philadelphia for recapping and modification. We have an Acopian power supply as the original is underpowered.

It has 4 Mod 1 strips
1972 - British pro audio manufacturer Allen & Heath is commissioned to build the MOD1. This quad console was built for Pink Floyd's live use around 1972 and can be seen in their film Live in Pompeii. This was subsequently sold and is thought to have ended up in a storage facility in North London.

3. 1973 - Allen & Heath built a second quad board in 1973. This was used for the 1974 Winter Tour. Its whereabouts are unknown.

Here is a shot of the Mod 1

Anyway excitement is high at Super 70 as this is a killer console.
Looking to install this sometime before the end of the year.

Why are you mangling the producer's desk?
Just get the patchbay after it.

Trust me, you'll mis that real estate once it's gone.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

Headed down to Philly to Matrix Audio Systems secret secure former military bunker to work on the A&H.... Cleaning faders/ Cleaning the faceplate from sticker residue /replacing the heavy composite wood bottom with a lightweight metal plate.
2 of the stickers that were on the channels said "U47" and Lang EQ!!

Try saving the sweet AH logo badge from the producers desk, that's classy.

Yes I plan to do that!
Heard channel 1 ....totally quiet and great EQ sweep!
Then we recap!!
Cut off the producers desk and now it's the perfect size for us.
Cant even tell it was ever there.
Of course the person who took it out of commission just cut all the wires so we have a real job on our hands.
Currently looking for full schematics.
Otherwise we will figure it out.
Sowter transformers on the inputs and very short signal path.
Eq's are overlapping like Pultec.

Sweet looking board, it's gonna be killer.

You may want to consider shoving one of these in the summing section, take things to the next level. http://classicapi.com/catalog/product_i ... cts_id=403

Interested in Matrix Audio Systems - couldn't find any info on them. I have a Studer board that needs a going over. Looking for a good tech in the North Jersey area, but willing to travel a bit.
