dude wrote more great songs than almost anyone. i'm having a tough time accepting a world without him. RIP TP, you will be sorely missed.

Total fave. I saw him on the So. Accents tour wit Dylan - talk about confuzzin'.
But when he broke into "Breakdown", "Refugee", Here Comes My Girl", that Animals cover ... everything was understood.

Losing so many great ones. I know I'm getting old and crochety, but I don't see anyone on the horizon capable of stepping up to the plate...

It still hasn't sunk in for me.

Kinda cool all the tribute performances. George Harrison's son Dhani, on Kimmel the other night, had "T.P." and a broken heart writ on his Charvel.

Yeah, he was highly respected. Lucinda Williams posted a lovely tribute as well.
Re: R.I.P., Tom Petty
As a guy who refuses to play in cover bands, I think I've covered around 10 of his songs over the years, starting with "Breakdown".
Actually, "Breakdown" was the second guitar solo part I taught myself, following "Sympathy for the Devil".
