I saw him inna club in Chi in the early 90's, loud and mean, playing thru a Mesa double rectifier half stack.
I went by myself because I liked his records (on Alligator) and no one else wanted to go.
And as I recall, he was dug in and angry, with bass, keys(?), drums, and a cowboy hat.
It was like he wasn't happy to be there, but was playin' for himself as much as anyone, and he was really good.
R.I.P.
