He was such a huge part of my musical development. Rush taught me how to play odd time signatures and Neil himself, the concept of compositional drum parts.

From the Rolling Stone obit:
At one point, he got in trouble for pounding out beats on his desk during class. His teacher’s idea of punishment was to insist that he bang on his desk nonstop for an hour’s worth of detention, time he happily spent re-creating Keith Moon’s parts from Tommy.

Neil was great, I got to play with him for two days in NYC, he was really a great person, said if Rush hadn’t taken off he’d be in a Zep cover band. I laughed, he was serious, then he played some Bonham and nailed the shit out of it! I was like “dude, you could totally do that”.
Harumph!
