Too old?

Post by vvv » Tue May 18, 2021 3:15 pm

My 24 y.o. daughter just told me she wants to see Pearl Jam this summer because Vedder is nearly too old to perform.

OK, I think The Who would be too old to put on a decent show, but Pearl Jam? Those guys are only just starting to get mailings from the AARP.

R I P doood…

My thoughts are…to see your favorites, not take concerts / the individuals in the band for granted, never know when that will go away.

I do admit I saw PJ on the 1st tour. 94? 95?

They were great - I had heard their album earlier that day in a head shop and loved it, then caught 'em that night opening for Soul Asylum, with 1/2 a PA and no drum riser. Vedder was magnetic, had the total look Matt Dillon stole later for Singles.

Which look, BTW, we thought was hilarious; within a year it was obsequious.

SA was great, also, on the Horse tour.

I saw Miles Davis a year and a half before he died. He was mind-blowing.

Max Roach was well into his 60s when I met him. And badass.

Elvin Jones was in his 70s when I saw him. Incredible.

Asleep At The Wheel is one of the best live bands I've ever seen and Ray Benson has got to be 70-ish.

I saw the Doobie Brothers a few years back and they were insanely good.

Hell, Cher was fantastic when I saw her in 2019.

Kris Kristofferson, not so great.

Gordon Lightfoot-- good, but the voice is GONE.

Fred Wesley is still a badass.

Age ain't nothing but a number.

So my Miles Davis story, obviously very old, is that the last time he played in Chi an acquaintance of mine was at an after-show party.

According to him Miles walked in and asked if anyone had any blow.

Somebody there did, and a lot, and poured what was said to be at least a cuppla grams on the table.

The story goes Miles hit it all, no sharing, said, "thanks" and left the party.

That was just a year or two before he died at the age of 65.

(Here's a video just posted in December of Ann Wilson [Heart] singing an AIC song - she's 70, and rocks it.)

Was really glad I got to see Dr. John a couple years before he passed. He was obviously old and frail, but he still had it.
Passed on the Soundgarden show I should have went to shortly before Cornell died, and instantly regretted it when i heard the news.

ok, while we are on that path... I moved to Austin TX in August of 1989. I had seen SRV a couple times, but not in Austin. by this time I think he was living in the Dallas, but he did come to Austin and we thought... let's catch him next time around. and in August of 1990 he was gone. so if you have the chance to see anyone that you want to see, don't postpone. there are others I know I should have gone to see too, but sometimes life happens.

I saw Soundgarden 3 times, SRV 1 time - what says a lot about me.

I saw Clapton once, also.

As well, I really wish I saw Van Morrison before he became dead to me.
