eric Metronome's Cover Of The Week...

Post by Eric Rottmayer » Tue Jan 31, 2006 5:12 pm

hey folks,

i just wanted to share one of my recent projects with everyone here:
i'm recording versions of songs i like for every week in 2006;
a new one posted every wednesday. so far i've done Beatles, Bright Eyes via
Jake Bellows, NRBQ & WILCO and i'm posting a new one tomorrow -

http://www.ericmetronome.com/covers.html

i'm recording on a tascam 2488 with pretty modest pre's and less
modest mics. i've been using that newer FMR RNLA on some stuff
and i really like it.

anyway, please let me know what you think etc.

i am releasing a new album on Sunken Treasure records this year as well.

enjoy and take much care,

eric

Well, I don't know if it's exactly taboo to cover Wilco, but I checked that track out. My suggestion would be to try something different with the arrangement than they did. You know, you've got the same strummy guitar basis as the original, the drums come in at the same time as the original, the vocals in the 2nd verse get "echoed" like in the original. I recognize there are some differences in your track, like dropping the drums for the 2nd chorus, shorter bridge, a fuzzy keyboard part — but I'd push it farther in your own direction. Obviously, you weren't going for a karaoke-perfect duplicate of the song (which can be a helpful technical exercise), you were putting a somewhat different spin on it, but it still sounds like it's Wilco's arrangement. Does that make sense?

Sincerely,
Leigh

They all sound great, especially "there's a place" -- I always support xylophone usage.

Thanks for posting them!

yes. totally. and when i was doing that one, i knew it was close to the original
and i kinda hate that. BUT i really like the original...and i doubt that it could be much better.
so why do a cover? right? yes. totally. but this is the song that my friend named his record label
after and last week was his birthday so i did it for fun and for him.
and i did learn something...i learned that i can't really sing like Tweedy,
at least in recorded form.

thanks for the input though. it's very helpful. check out the SMOG cover
for tomorrow.

hey thanks. that's a toy-type xylo recorded with a $2000 tube mic so there
is something funny there...but it sounds OK i guess.

thanks again.

sorry to sound like a broken record (or cd? i think a broken cd is worse...)
but my new cover of the week is available for your ears only. it's a cover
of The Secret Stars song, Sanity Assassins. The Secret Stars was/is a project between
Jodi Buonanno and Geoff Farina (also of Karate) and the songs...well, they
really mean a lot to me. anyway, hope you like it.

I loved some of the Elliott Smith covers youve done. Especially your version of "Dancing on the Highway/Still Here". Excellent.

Hey Eric, meant to tell you I've got your cover of Tonight You Belong To Me (from the ES board) in my rotation and really dig it!
