Well, I've never really spent much time with any of his stuff, but I always liked it when I heard it. I went to itunes to listen to something, and the first tune that came up is "Love Comes to Me" (it seems to be the most popular on iTunes), and that's a tune I feel like I could get into.
Is it alright to do this if I'm not a knowledgeable Will Oldham fan?
What would be the timeframe for doing this?

I hope that's okay, because I'm not either. Is it alright to do this if I'm not a knowledgeable Will Oldham fan?
I've been wanting to get involved in one of these TOMB cover projects for a while, and I thought this one would be interesting and challenging, since I'm a non-fan. Will Oldham is someone I should like, his star is in the same constellation as a lot of music I do like, but every time I listen, something in the lyrics or voice or presentation makes me uneasy. Can't always put my finger on exactly what... When I heard "For Every Field..." (the song I chose to cover) I liked the lyrics right away, so I picked it. Hope I can make it happen in a month!
i'm kind of in the same boat. my girlfriend is a huge fan, and has been getting me into his stuff. and i've been getting her interested in us recording together (she plays piano well and i think she's got a great voice), so this is serving a lot of purposes at the moment... including another step towards justifying the odd bits of gear i keep dragging home.BandyLou wrote:I hope that's okay, because I'm not either. Is it alright to do this if I'm not a knowledgeable Will Oldham fan?

Well, here's something like my version of my song. Quick and dirty, to say the least. About an hour or two of work. Thoughts?

Here's an example of a track I played on if that's holding anybody up. Drums were tracked after all other tracking was done.

vvv had a good idea in laying out the signal paths, so here are mine in all their glory:mjau wrote:Sad Iron and vvv...
Both really great stuff.
vvv...love that guitar solo. Neil Young redux. Very cool background vocals, too.
Sad Iron...what is the amp & guitar you're playing? It's a great sound. I've always imagined this song at the tempo you chose - really nicely done.
All Vox CAD M9-->Presonus Eureka-->Logic
Lead vox with Male Creamy Lead preset tweaked to suit taste.
The harmony vox has the Male Backing preset on it with no tweaks.
The ooohs has the pop back vox preset with tweaks.
Shaker is the M9/Eureka combo as well with the soft shaker preset in Logic
Drums are the Ultrabeat thing in Logic with the Asian kit looped on a part I banged out in a minute or two.
Gtr: Korean ASAT Classic direct through a Digimax into the Mellow Amp preset in Logic with no tweaks
The lead is the same signal path but the 80s chorus + verb preset in Logic with no tweaks
Soft Hall reverb on an aux send.
That's it. Like I said before, quick and dirty, but I think it turned out ok. the Logic virtual stuff sounds better to my ears than any I've tried before. They are making me very lazy.
As for the tempo, I always liked that this was such a downer lyrically, but the tempo and arrangement were upbeat. Nice irony, but me, I'm Post Ironic, and so I just thought I'd go with spooky downer.
