I seem to recall the guy from Def Leppard doing things like recording only one string at a time when he did some powerchord type stuff so there would be 3 guitar tracks each with a different note. He didn't want the record to sound too heavy, so if you have a mild overdrive and then you play one string at a time, it's pretty clear vs. when you hit 3 strings and it gets sorta dirty. Chuck Berry proved that 50 years ago.
