Good call Jitters; wouldn't have remembered that one.
Wikipedia and another source say it was an "electric timbale" (that's a quote from someone at Hi). But I've never heard of one of those. I wonder if they mean something like the Synare? Which would not be a drum-machine per se, but it is an analog electronic drum.

Also check out The Wailers "Rainbow Country;" number 15 on the "Bob Marley & The Wailers-- Roots of a Legend" CD. Earlier material recorded in the Lee "Scratch" Perry era, it's very hard to tell one way or the other, but the drums have a mechanized feel, seem to be a one-bar loop, and if they were played by Carly Barrett, for instance, live drums have never sounded so "machine-y" in all the rest of the Wailers recorded output. With Perry's penchant for bringing in new gear to play with, I suspect an analog drumbox or some mixture of live and programmed.
