It's interesting to see what ultimately captures our attentions. So far, the faves named in this thread are pretty heavy on natural reverb. Even Wilco's Being There makes good use of reverb. Time Out of Mind is the ultimate in that department, I suppose.
yeah, after i posted my picks i realized that a few rely heavily on room sounds. i get bored with close mic-ed everything. i really do sometimes.

I agree completely with everyone who mentioned
Dylan's Time out of Mind
Exile on Main St

Also:
GBV's "Isolation Drills" sounds pretty good
Flaming Lips "Soft Bulletin"
Bill Frissell "Gone Just Like a Train" (Jim Keltner's drums sound so good for the style of music)

my bloody valentine - loveless - some songs have over 100 tracks. 30-40 guitar and vocal overdubs.

anything brian eno worked on, from solo stuff (here come the warm jets - it took a good 15 years for anyone else to catch up to what was going on here) to talking heads to U2 (its no coincidence that he produced their best albums - joshua tree and unforgettable fire.

flaming lips - soft bulletin - perfect sounding record.

Wow, so many great records to think about.

A few off the top of my head:

Clutch: Elephant Riders
Portishead: Dummy
Flaming Lips: Yoshimi
Black Label Society: Their first album, I think it's self titled
The Shins: home made demo, not their label release
Amon Tobin: just pick any
Beck: Mellow Gold

Ah man I'm gonna stop there before I go digging through my CD collection.

I loved the album Raw Power but I really coudn?t stand the way it sounded. I?m not sure whether it was done during mixing or mastering, but that album was distorted in an unpleasant way. I can barely listen to that album for a couple songs before I have to switch to something else. If not for that annoying distortion on everything above 5khz I would love the tones. Although I thought the Stooges first album sounded pretty sweet.

Some of my other favs are:

Spoon - Gimme Some Fiction

Rx Bandits - The Resignation (while very compressed, it sounds really powerful. Also basic tracks were done live.)

Beatles - Revolver

Neil Young - Harvest

Built To Spill - Perfect From Now On

Beulah - The Coast Is Never Clear and Yoko

Elliot Smith - Figure 8

Interesting that a bunch of people have listed Elliott Smith Figure 8 - it does sound really beautiful but i vastly prefer the recording on his first 3 before he went hifi - Especially with his vocals, the paper thin ghostly quality of the voice on something like The Biggest Lie is just devastating. Same goes for Speed Trials. In the later albums when he would sing for real and "project" his voice...i dunno, it kind of lost something for me. I also kind of like the fact that you can hear the wobbly 4 track and tape hiss and that stuff.

Some other of my fave sounding records -

Flaming Lips - Soft Bulletin (those DRUMS!)
Nirvana - In Utero
Chris Isaak - Heart Shaped World (mmm...creamy)
Pink Floyd - The Wall ( i don't like the material and songwriting as much as their earlier stuff but goddamn if it isn't one of the best recording jobs ever.)
The Smiths - The Queen is Dead (Guitars sound like God was playing them)
Louis Armstrong - What a Wonderful World
Buddy Holly - All his stuff, but i think "Everyday" and "True Love Waits" sound the best to my ears.
Early Elvis - especially "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock"
Patsy Cline - every single recording sounds unbelievably good
Blonde Redhead - Melodies of Certain Damaged Lemons
Joni Mitchell - Blue (Beautiful vox and acoustic guitar sounds)
Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights - Peter Katis did an amazing job on this one.

There are many albums that I think have great sound. The following is a short list of albums that have attracted my attention sound-wise...

The Beatles - White Album (George Martin, duh)
Modest Mouse - Good News for...
Mount Analog
Pink Floyd - Dark Side, Wish You Were Here and Animals
Kings of Leon - Aha Shake...
Michael Jackson - Off The Wall and Thriller (Quincy, duh)

There are more, but that's all I can think of right now.
