favorite "sounding" albums

Post by lyman » Wed Dec 21, 2005 11:25 am

i was thinking about my favorite albums when reading another thread on this forum. and i realized there was some that, while not neccesarily the best or even my favorites, i love them for how they sound and they way they're engineered.... the "sonic vibe" if you will. i figure what better place to find new reccomendations for stuff like that than here! some of mine:

cowboy junkies- trinity session
bob dylan- time out of mind
tom waits- mule variations
weezer- pinkerton
the band- s/t

The latest Broken Social Scene sounds very good to me. There's also a Swedish band I always mention - Logh - that made an incredible sounding album a couple of years ago. So open and 3-dimensional it's crazy.

I'm a big fan of the way Wilco's Being There sounds.

off the top of my head

Webb Wilder's Town & Country and Doo Dad. The latest (About Time) is pretty good too. I really dig the mix (R.S. Field, "the Ionizer").

I always thought that the King's X "Faith, Hope, Love" sounded good too. Everything is very clear.

Dave Brubeck's "Time Out". cool.

Off the top of my head...

The Bad Plus - These Are the Vistas
Ryan Adams - 29
Jeff Buckley - Grace Eps (Payote Radio Theatre)
The Chariot - Everything is Alive, Everything is Breathing, Nothing is Dead and Nothing is Bleeding
Bob Dylan - Time Out of Mind

Without a doubt, my answer is Angstrom by Steve Tibbets and Knut Hamre. I am not a fan of newage (rhymes with "sewage") ordinarily, but this is a whole different bag. It's marvelous, and easy to find at the public library for those who are curious.

It's interesting to see what ultimately captures our attentions. So far, the faves named in this thread are pretty heavy on natural reverb. Even Wilco's Being There makes good use of reverb. Time Out of Mind is the ultimate in that department, I suppose.

Weezer - Pinkerton
ELO - New World Record/Out Of The Blue
Boston - Boston
The Sonics - Here Are The Sonics
The Stooges - Raw Power (Iggy remix)
The Cars - The Cars
The Raspberries - Side 3

I love it when albums have a unique "sonic fingerprint" of some sort. But then again I wouldn't listen to any of those hundreds of times over if I didn't love the songs so much. Songs and sound should go hand-in-hand.
