Ween, Anyone ??

Post by konabuzz » Tue Jan 24, 2006 8:14 pm

Jesus Ferschniken Cri......!

Ok, I consider myself to have fairly broad tastes......everything from Lawrence Welk to Fripp's No Pussyfooting, from Japanese traditional flute music to ....you get the idea. It's all good......and so is WEEN!! I'm just surprised I haven't given them a critical listen before now. Hmmmm......

Kinda like a less literate, but more pop-tasty Zappa....or like a more confident They Might be Giants. Very inventive. Stylistic chameleons....Now I know that cleverness for cleverness - sake can get old after a while, but for now I'm enjoying the ride.

I gave 'em a shot after hearing Gabrielle from Shinola on the radio as it was just an uncanny Thin Lizzy homage and soon had bought half a dozen Ween Cd's....Yeah, sure....some of it ...well, a lot of it is cartoon-like....but damn....wish I'd done it! I don't know --just dig the Ween Bro's fuck'em-all attitude. And they can play fo sho.

Anyone?

Somewhere buried in GodWeenSatan there is a fantastic impersonation of Bruce Springsteen that lasts all of fifteen seconds. Genius.

Likewise I am still in awe of the entire Pure Guava album. They are responsible for teaching me the profound artistic value of playing out of tune when it suits the song, and for proving that spirit and inventiveness trump production value and sound quality.

Finally, the extended live version of "Poop Ship Destroyer" on the live album is truly revolting (in a good way of course).

I simply can't get enough of them. Absolutly fantastic band. Probably my favorite of all time. Great guys too, humble fantastic musicians. I highly recommend "White Pepper". I think it gets underrated as a pop record atempt, but anyone who likes ween and has really listened to that wonderful album knows how brown it really is. On that note, there isnt a ween album I wouldn't recomend.

As far as I know they are in the process of recording a new album right now in their new studio. I can't wait.

Ween was totally my first rock show.
They played two nights in a row, 3 hours each, and didn't repeat a song. I mean, cripes, that's some substantial rockage.

...And they do a great cover of Purple Rain, too.

Wasn't there a Ween song in a TV ad for a car a few years back? (Honda Civic?) Glorious left-field production, with varispeed-ed vocals for a "strawberry fields" effect.

I heard the song on the ad and thought ...what the hell is this? it's great!!

Someone told me it was Ween. "The Ocean" ...or something ...was the title(?)
