records with shit deep singers
I'm looking for rock/soul music with really low voiced singers that I could download a tune or two to learn a little something from. My voice is shit deep and always clashing with other low end stuff like bass. My songs have too many instruments (problem one) so I'm mostly interested in 'busy' music. Beat Happening isn't really what I'm looking for if that makes any sense. (I <3 beat happening)
I?m attached to the sound of dub bass (problem two) but realize that sound doesn?t always sit well in a busy mix ? particularly with vocals that are deep like mine. But if it?s out there, I wanna hear it.
Thanks,
Will

Check out the Temptations, Psychedelic Shack or Puzzle People, for really awesome singing throughout the whole range, but the dude who sings bass is the absolute king. The music's kind of corny, but the Statler Brothers (the country band that toured with J. Cash a bunch of times), had a pretty good bass singer. You might check out some old country records if you're really into this, more than rock, where you aren't going to find a whole lot of good singers. The dude who sang bass on Johnny Paycheck's Save Your Heart for Me (off of Meet my Family, which is hard to find), was pretty awesome, although I can't remember his name.

mid to late period Leonard Cohen is kickass for low voice singing (I love his first stuff too) - sometimes you just have to navigate around the cheese-ass synth horns and skinemax backup singers.
and how about Nick Cave - the Good Son album is particularly good for deep voice.
and don't forget Captain Beefheart - he had quite a range - real gravelly lows.
I'll add another vote for Skip Spence
and let us not forget Michael Gira, interviewed in the latest Tape-Op

andre williams, lee hazelwood, dead can dance, jesus + mary chain, paul robeson, sisters of mercy and crash test dummies were some other suggestions
Thanks again everyone. Now if I could just learn to arrange, sing and mix I should be in good shape.
