Queen with Paul Rodgers on lead vox
What a fucking disgrace!
Dude totally over-emotes EVERY SINGLE LINE.
It's like he took singing lessons from Xtina Aguillera or Mariah Carey or something!
They should all be ashamed.

Call me crazy, but I thought it was a pretty badass show.
And given that when one's lead singer dies, the options are basically:
1) give up performing your music entirely
2) hire a singer who sounds just like the dead guy
3) hire a singer who sounds nothing like the dead guy
i think option 3 is actually the best of the bunch. I definitely prefer this over journey replacing Steve Perry (who I understand is not actually dead) with a Steve Perry soundalike.

I saw this version of Queen performing on VH1 this weekend. I'm a big Mecury fan. He can never be replaced. Queen still sounds ace. They are a great band...and their harmonies never sounded better. I'm very impressed that they can still pull those off. I didn't really like Bad Company and I don't care for Paul Rodgers...but, he is a good singer. I agree with dwlb. For those that were repulsed by this version of Queen, who would you recommend as a lead singer? Mercury is obviously irreplacable. But seriously. Any suggestions? If you were a member of a ensemble like Queen and your singer passed on, would you never perform your music again?dwlb wrote:Call me crazy, but I thought it was a pretty badass show.

Well, it's a good thing Brian May's solo records sell so well, then.

Paul Rodgers may be a great singer... I'm not a fan. But, if I had to choose between performing shitty versions of great songs, or just not performing those songs anymore, then I'd choose to turn the page.
I'd rather see Queen just play instrumental versions of their great songs, than have some dude go up there and "make them his own". As far as that goes, if I'm seeing a band play a "nostalgia" set, and they don't have their lead singer anymore, then yeah, I think that I'd prefer Steve Augeri (the Steve Perry knockoff) to a guy who wants to hurt a good song by "making it his own".

i don't feel THAT strongly about the issue, but the fact that john deacon isn't involved is significant. only half of the original band? yeah, i dunno....
and much like the guitar in van halen songs, the vocals in queen songs were such the focal point. it would be like alex and mike anthony touring as "van halen."

There aren't many rock bands where the singer isn't the focal point...
I have not heard the new Queen with Paul Rogers. I do like his singing, tho.
I agree (as usual) with dwlb: I would much rather see a band replace their singer with someone totally different who can make the songs their own or at least try and not be the old singer. A new guy trying to be the old singer is the ultimate example of zero integrity. I will kill INXS, or Journey, etc. DIE! But Queen... rock on for picking a pro who has their own voice, not some freddie mercury wannabe. At least they are open to having the songs be reinterpereted a little, and to me that shows some artistic integrity.
And as far as throwing in the towel just because freddy is gone... maybe they just really want to keep playing rock music for a while.
They might be doing it for the money, or they might be doing it for the fun.
Probably both. But whatever they do, they can never smear the greatness of what they were, the recordings stand forever, the live shows are documented. It's not like this new version will eclipse the memory of the old. Quite the contrary, so let them have their fun rocking out and making a few bucks. Who cares?
It's like this whole thing with the "new doors". Do you really think, despite how disgraceful the whole thing is, that ANYONE will remember it in like ten years? Hell no, nobody will remember the new doors, but the real band's recordings will live forever.
