What happened to Steve Winwood?

Post by honkyjonk » Thu Oct 19, 2006 4:34 pm

Man I love the early Traffic. Maybe all Traffic.
And Spencer Davis Group. Even Blind Faith, despite Crapton.

What the hell happened to that guy? Gimme Some Lovin at seventeen? Come On.
How talented can one little white kid be?

And now?

Goddamn smooth jazz.

Where is he now? WTF?

Plus, he was the organist on Hendrix's Voodoo Chile!

Are you forgetting about the "Arc of the Diver" 1980s era Steve Winwood? Purposely  ?

What, did something happen to him?

He probably makes the rounds of ribfests and the like every summer. The official word is at http://stevewinwood.com/ - looks like he's staying home for now.

I saw him about 15 years ago and it was a pretty astounding show. Russ Kunkel was playing drums.

That's actually a really good album. It's the ones after it that suck.

I bought a bunch of records at a yard sale recently, including Traffic's Mr. Fantasy. I expected to like it, but unfortunately, most of it was quite lame. The same was true for the Stones' Between the Buttons. Pink Floyd's A Nice Pair (Saucer full of Secrets + the Piper at the Gates of Dawn) is incredible though. It's interesting to see what holds up from that era and what doesn't. There are a couple good songs on the Traffic album, but most of it is embarrassing hippie cheese. Blind Faith was good stuff, though, and Winwood was (is?) a really good singer.

I dunno man, I saw him last year at the Jazz Festival in New Orleans, basically he was headlining and in a race against a thunderstorm that was moving in...you could see lightning flashing in the distance and thunderclouds rolling through...the show got spookier and spookier as it went on...didn't cut the show short or anything...he ended with a really looooong version of "Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys" that was superb...only did a couple of the schlocky '80s songs. I didn't think he sucked at all!
