I agree. Is it just me, or was this one a huge improvement for them?BandyLou wrote:roots & crowns by califone.
I also liked:
Centro-Matic "Fort Recovery"
Tim Easton "Ammunition"
The Walkmen "A Hundred Miles Off"
Jolie Holland "Springtime Can Kill You"
It was definitely a good year for shows, not sure why. Lots of good acousticy-solo stuff especially... Mark Kozelek, Jeff Tweedy, Jolie, Cat Power.

I don't post here at all, I read when I can. Have a million fave albums for this (and every) year but I want to put in a plug for the latest Derek Trucks CD "Songlines." I live in Atlanta but am by no means a southern rock fan. This record is just beautiful. Derek's a tremendous guitarist (but not an up-the-neck slide freak as is customary in the genre) and is endlessly curious about all kinds of music. His Fateh Ali Khan medley on this record is as fine a track as I've heard this year.

Here's 3 good ones:
M.Ward - Post War
Dub Trio - New Heavy
Las Ondas Marteles - Y Despu?s De Todo: Canciones De Miguel Angel Ruiz
(this last one came out in 2004 but it was new to me in 2006. Absolutely stunning
arrangements and production. Gorgeous songs. Cuba via Paris)

#1 is quickly becoming what will be on next years list, The Shins - Wincing the Night Away. Stolen off the internet, but I will by the vinyl when it comes out (Jan 23). At first I was like eh, but then the songs keep getting stuck in my head. The first song is amazing. The production is really good.
And then:
Centro-Matic "Fort Recovery"
Jolie Holland "Springtime Can Kill You"
Destroyer "Destroyers Rubies"
Tom Waits "Orphans"
Hold Steady "Boys and Girls In America"
Joanna Newsome "Ys"
Cat Power "The Greatest"
Beirut "Gulag Orkestar"
Yo La Tengo "I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass "
A Hawk and Hacksaw "The Way the Wind Blows"
Mogwai "Mr. Beast"
Thom Yorke "The Eraser"
The Mountain Goats "Get Lonely"
Grandaddy "Just Like the Fambly Cat"
Bob Dylan "Modern Times"
Kris Kristofferson "This Old Road"
Sparklehorse "Dreamt For Light Years In The Belly Of A Mountain"
Looks like a pretty good year to me! There are probably more that I am forgetting.
Haven't had a chance to hear the Los Lobos album. Was a bit disappointed by the Flaming Lips new one.

I knew I'd forget something, so I'm adding Witchs self titled debut. Probably my favorite of the year. I've been meaning to start a topic about these guys for awhile. J Mascis on drums and enough fuzzed out guitars to make em the best heavy rock group around(something sorta in the vain of Sabbath). Hopefully some of you have checked these guys out.
