Brainiac were pretty much the greatest band of the nineties.

I've been listening to little more than Brainiac's entire catalogue for the past few weeks. God, WHAT a band! Their unreleased/unrecorded major label debut should be the stuff of legends, one of those all-time "would have been the best ever" deals like how Mercury Rev were going to work with Jack Nitzsche on the followup to "Deserter's Songs" but he croaked at the last minute.

I'm going to make two assertions here that you can feel free to argue with:

- The true heart of punk music is science fiction, and

- Brainiac were the true heirs of the true punks like Pere Ubu and Magazine.

Great, great band, and crazy-sounding records, what with the weird vocal effects and off-kilter synth stuff mixed in with the spazzing guitars and drums. R.I.P.!

Saw them in Chicago at the Metro once. Great live band!

I only have "Smack Bunny Baby" but it is a great sounding record. Eli Janney(Girls Vs. Boys) produced and engineered.

there is nothing rare / barely-released or anything by them is there?
just curious...

gawd this band changed my life.
seriously.

the most under-rated or unknown watermark of a band of the 90s.

their records still sound new.

I sure did love the Brainiac but my money is still on Polvo for best 90's band.

Polvo were awesome at times!

If brainiac were anymore crazy live than those Enon shows during that first record....damn, what an experience!

I went to see Low somewhere in north florida and this band I'd never heard of was opening. Al said they were great, that they sounded like "Beefhart meets Devo." That didn't really mean anything to me at the time, but they blew me away. My dad and I both became huge fans that night. I'm not sure that dude wasn't Jim Morrisson reincarnate.
