New albums this summer--what are you waiting for?

Post by Tragabigzanda » Thu Jun 14, 2007 10:42 pm

In the interest of getting excited for new music, my list of summer releases. On a side note, I''ll be buying them all from my local record shop (except for maybe the Kelly Clarkson record, which I'm 100% comfortable with downloading from Limewire).

6/19 Bumps (John McEntire from Tortoise doing a funk trio, released by Stones Throw)
6/19 Daby Toure
6/26 Nels Cline
6/26 Beastie Boys instrumental record
6/26 Bad Brains (produced by Mike D from the B-Boys)
6/26 Kelly Clarkson (with Mike Watt playing bass on six tracks!!!)

7/17 Suzanne Vega
7/24 UNKLE (though I think it might wind up sucking)
7/24 Prince
7/31 Oh No (another Stones Throw release that sounds interesting)

8/21 MIA (have you heard "Bird Flu"?!?! That beat is fucking sick.

What are you all looking forward to hearing?

Right now I just want to get the new Shellac and the True West reissues.

I hear Steve Wynn might have a new one soon, and Black Crows, as well.

7/10 - Smashing Pumpkins - Zeitgeist
7/10 - Darkest Hour - Deliver Us

two of my all-time favorite bands putting out albums on the same day? shazam!

is the smashing pumpkins album going to disappoint? probably. will i buy it anyways? absolutely.

8/7 - Swivel Chair's The Slow Transmission (I engineered it)
8/21 - Caribou's Andorra

That's about it for me right off the top of my head. I'm just not that "in the know" right this second.

Yeah, Caribou used to be Manitoba. And Dan Snaith is both of them. And he is quite the talent.

Can you tell me a bit about the Swivel Chair record? What sort of gear/techniques did you use? I love listening to records and knowing how the sounds were made...

Hell yes, new Suzanne Vega is supposed to be more like 99.9 farhenheit degrees, my favorite Vega record...

gave up on prince a while back, but maybe he'll change our minds and do something phone-key

well, i've heard a bit of Darkest Hour's new one... and they're definitely keeping it real... every time they put out an album i worry there's going to be some big label vocal coaching BS involved that would screw everything up (anybody remember Hopesfall?), but this one is a solid release.

I have never heard them, but I have heard a lot about them.

Steve Wynn ( a fave) references them as a seminal Paisley Underground band, and I just read a positive review at allmusic that seems consistent.

I always wanted to have a band like The Dream Syndicate!

Hmmmm:

Recorded in both New York and London and produced by Jimmy Hogarth (Sia, Corinne Bailey Rae), "Beauty & Crime" is Vega's seventh album and her debut on the Blue Note label. The effort emerges after a long recording layoff following 2001's "Songs in Red and Gray."

She's on Blue Note now. Interesting.

No NC tour dates. Bummer.
