A Wizard A True Star... Nice phase

Post by cgarges » Thu Nov 29, 2007 12:53 am

I just got hip to Todd Rundgren's A Wizard, A True Star. It's a terrific record, but how in God's name did this record come out on vinyl in 1973? There's so much wildly loud out-of-phase stuff going on that I would think the needle would be jumping all over.

anything about this record AT ALL would be amazing to learn...
every time i listen to it i cant even begin to imagine how runt put it together...
it would be a daunting task even in the land of cut-n-paste...
and then the sounds...
gawd...
those over comped drum sounds...
gawd...
i luvz it.

todd's always been at the forefront of cool recording stuff. one of the Utopia albums was done on early digital tape, but something went wrong, so the whole record has this weird sound. it's not lofi per se, just very odd. cool in places though...

i think he may have burned the idea of turning your house into a makeshift recording studio into my brain at an early age. there's a great ad for "something/Anything", the album either before (or after?) "A Wizard.." . he's in his living room, surrounded by recording gear and instruments; reel to reels, guitars, a grand piano, modular synth. in a documentary from the eighties called 'the ever popular tortured artist effect' he's apparently updated his gear; at the very beginning he walks into his living room; he's now got a huge mixing desk, early personal computer, and a synclavier!

Cool album, I like "International Feel" a lot.

So, I guess either no one can hear that the drums are out of phase or no one has any idea how this record made it to vinyl.

I'm listening to this record right now. It's amazing, no matter how he put it together.

I don't think we talked about this one. I just got hip to it a while back. It is an amazing piece of work.
