Misery Index - Dissent
awesome. a very close 2nd to "Overthrow" IMO though. all the stuff they did with Kevin Talley on drums is unstopable. just got the newer one, "discordia"... blegh. pretty boring. drums sound aweful. has it's moments, but doesn't measure up to earlier stuff. it has less of the crust-punk/grind vibe that makes them so good.

I'm partial to Dissent a little more just 'cause...I like Jason's voice the best, and I think that (sonically) it's the perfect blend of rawness and "polish" for metal: it doesn't sound too slick or thin (or too cloudy, like far too much death metal does), but it doesn't have any comprimises in sound either. Everything is totally present and perfectly clear, and yet it doesn't sacrifice any intensity or heaviness.

I was disappointed by Dischordia at first, but it slowly grew on me (I just recently decided that I liked it enough to buy the vinyl, and that was a noticable improvement). Sonically it doesn't come close to touching what they did before, but the songs are there (a little different, but there) IMO. Breathing Pestilence especially is awesome, and I like that they're switching it up a little and playing some slower stuff. But yeah, the drums sound awful (and I'm not sure how that was managed; their new drummer sounds amazing live), and the guitars seem kinda "wide" and thin for MI. I think they're just going for a more straight-up/"typical" death metal sound...have you heard the Hang 'em High 7"?

As perfect as that first one was, with all it's disco killing goodness and huge backing vox, I still tend to give the followup more play time. Both masterpieces though, no doubt there.

My 2cents...

Miles Bitches Brew - Sorry, I can't listen to this record without being annoyed at all the noodling going on. I can't feel any energy or cohesivness when I've tried to listen to this album. And believe me, I've tried cause eeryone said "its the birth of cool"...when I want to hear "progressive Jazz", I have to pull out Grand Wazoo, or Wakajawaka.

For Miles I have to go with Kinda Blue, that's a good album through and through...

Flaming Lips - Yoshimi battles the Pink Robots. 1st good album I had purchesed in a long while that brought back the "One album played continueously" feeling.

Death Cab for Cutie - Plans - Great album for a rainy saturday laying in bed and.....

Husker Du - Zen Arcade - Start a stereo volume war with your neighbors and put this one on.

Greatfull Dead - American Beauty - With a bottle of Chateu St. Jean cabernet.
What do YOU create?

definately agree about the sonic aspect of dissent. my favorite in that regard as well. it's the perfect capture of their sound. i picked up the vinyl version last time they came through albany. the lyrics on that one are some of Jason's best as well.

did get Hang 'em High at the same time as Dischordia. haven't given it a close listen yet. i'm not giving up on dischordia yet.

do you have the split they did w/ Commit Suicide? that's really good too. and if you haven't already, check out Commit Suicide. my favorite grind band. they track everything live together (to tape i think) with no triggers or anything. "Human Larvae (earthly cleansing)" is one of the heaviest records i've ever heard. on willowtip records.

These have great "album" feels to me where it really feels cohesive and the sounds from tune to tune are sonically similar and there is almost a point to the collection of tunes.

Rock

Tom Petty - Damn the Torpedoes
Bruce - Darkness on the Edge of Town
There's more, but these keep getting played in my house for the above reason.

Jazz

Miles - Kind of Blue and Nefertiti
Trane - Ballads
Wayne Shorter - Juju and Speak No Evil

Ry Cooder & V.M. Bhatt - A Meeting by the River. They met a few hours before recording this album....some of the most inspired improvisations ever.

Brian Eno- Music for Airports

Miles Davis- In a Silent Way

Liars- Drums Not Dead.....a stone cold classic.

Silver Jews- American Water

.....and my band's upcoming album. Think Abbey Road meets A Love Supreme but a lot better.
