This is a nice recording, for sure. Let me URGE you to pick up a copy of the Juilliard Quartet's recording of these pieces from the early 50s. Their recording from the 80s is good but is no match. These two are very close to my heart and I've nearly worn out my copy because no other recording can come close to this. Since it has not been available on CD I have listened to all I could. It has recently been reissued on CD, to my great delight.

This is a brilliant example of the clarity found in string playing from that era (the late 50s). The Emerson Quartet is wonderful but their recording, like most of these wonderful works, is a bit too thick for the music.

Plus, you get two amazing pieces by Webern. His six bagatelles are my favorites from him. I am a string player so I judge composers by their quartets. Or operas.

This topic got me to thinking. I would assume the idea of 'masterpiece' being a fully cohesive album-as-entity artist's statement. I might have to add a few at a later date. Skipping the more obvious ones (Dylan, Neil Young, Hendrix, VU, etc.) , many of which have been mentioned and just thinking about some (mostly) older classics, that haven't been mentioned ..

do you have the split they did w/ Commit Suicide? that's really good too. and if you haven't already, check out Commit Suicide. my favorite grind band. they track everything live together (to tape i think) with no triggers or anything. "Human Larvae (earthly cleansing)" is one of the heaviest records i've ever heard. on willowtip records.

Don't own the split; been passively looking for it on vinyl for awhile, but not real hard. I'll definitely look for it a little more intensely. Haven't heard Commit Suicide, but I'll look into them. I'm not a huge grind fan; the only grind I really like is Brutal Truth and Total Fucking Destruction (I have a hard time enjoying most "gore" lyrics and I like some dynamics in my music, even in my death metal).
