generichumanperson wrote:first of all, i cant believe how many people on here are into so many of the newer 'indie' bands that all the people i know here at college get into and act like its the most inventive ingenious stuff that only they and a few other people can possibly understand. But, some of those bands are good. But I can't stand how these people act. I also think a lot of these 'indie' bands are just really alternative, but indie is such a widely used term now, that it almost can be attached to any artist or band. And it makes them seem more underground. The indie scene seems very elitist to me, in terms of the fans, like they are all competing to have discovered this or that band before the other person. It makes me sick. Anyway, I might have a top 5, or top 2.
1. Say anything - in defense of the genre. Noone else on here apparently likes them, but I think he's a great songwriter.
2. Straylight run - the needles the space
3. Saves the day - under the boards
4. Jimmy eat world - chase this light
5. Poison the well - versions

actually those are the only cds of the past year I bought. So its kind of like ranking them I guess. I usually find older stuff and get that, like a couple of you have mentioned. You probably think I only like stuff like that, but you're WRONG!
Blah blah blah.

You really care that much that people are trying to find new music?

Stop listening to the fans and give the music a chance. Nobody here is in a pissing contest to see how many new or indie bands they can find. They just like the music. Call me elitist all you want, but I went on a four week tour opening up for Jimmy Eat World this summer.

Top five in no order...
Good Life - Help Wanted Nights
Kanye West - Graduation
Modest Mouse - We Were Dead...
Maria Taylor - Lynn Teeter Flower
Radiohead - In Rainbows

It's really difficult for me to narrow things down to five records. I have wide and varying tastes and not only discovered new music this year (as in newly released), but also got into some 30-40 year old records (Zombies Box set, Paul and Linda's "Ram" via the Ram out takes, Band On the Run, etc).

However, some of my favorite records from this year were (in revolving order depending on the sun and moon and mixed company):

Caribou - Andorra
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
Apostle of Hustle - The National Anthem of Nowhere
Broken Social Scene Presents Kevin Drew - Spirit If...
Feist - The Reminder
Les Savy Fav - Let's Stay Friends
Peter Bjorn and John - Writer's Block
Field Music - Tones of Town
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna You Are The Destroyer
Thurston Moore - Trees Outside of the Academy
Pole - Steingarten
Wilco - Sky Blue Sky
Junior Boys - Dead Horse EP
Shins - Wincing the Night Away

Others that I have but haven't had enough time with:
Deerhoof, Interpol, Air, Arcade Fire, Band of Horses, PJ Harvey, The Ponys, Robert Plant and Allison Krauss, Amusement Parks On Fire, Modest Mouse...

Folks/records who I am rediscovering or discovered for the first time:
Paul and Linda's Ram
Wings - Band on the Run
Assorted Roy Harper from 1968-1972
John Lennon and Harry Nilson - Pussycats
Cat Power
Boris
The Swimmers

Best (guilt) free new music compilation that I've found:

Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

Black Francis - Bluefinger

Dr. Dog - We All Belong

Loose Fur - Born in the USA (2006? 2007 release?)

The Great Depression - Self Titled (these guys are from Cincinnati and this is a local release but damn, it's really good. Two guys playing acoustic guitars harmonizing together and singing about alcohol, heroin and loss - we played a show with them or else I would have probably never heard of them but it's definitely in my top five for the year.)

Honorable Mention:
Iron Maiden - Matter of Life and Death
Motion City Soundtrack - Even if it Kills Me
Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank

Guy: Well, I am the drummer.

I never really participate in list making, but here goes:

Dinosaur Jr- Beyond
Thurston Moore- Trees Outside The Academy
P.J. Harvey- Chalk
Elliot Smith- New Moon
The Low Budgets- Leave Us A Loan

All of these were fairly obvious, and mainstream, sans The Low Budgets, but this year I honestly didn't seek out a ton of records by artists that I didn't already like...in stores anyhow. I did, however go to a lot of local shows and bought alot of stuff from the bands i sincerely liked. I think that's important.
Anyhow, Happy New Year!

ipressrecord, yeah, a lot of my ears perpetually are in rediscovering or discovering things. there were a ton of things 'new to me', but, 'new new' is a different story.

i dig the good the bad and the queen record, too. it was surprisingly good. good production on it. danger mouse, right?

I'm only complaining about the 'indie kids', although i do know that in any genre of music I guess theres a group thats annoying. I just happen to know a bunch of annoying people that like that kind of music. And I could care less that you opened for jimmy eat world.

Yeah, that was my latest, "What album's playing now?" moment in Amoeba Music. When I found out it was JT I felt uncool for having liked it.

I was just thinking that since you made a blanket statement about people on this board and the type of music that they like, then you might be interested to know that hey, we're not all bad people. I mean, I met a lot of jerks on that tour as well.

Since they were in your list, I figured my inclusion of that fact would let you know that not everybody who listens to independent music is a "kid" or a music elitist.
