from an earlier post-----

Honorable Mention:
Iron Maiden - Matter of Life and Death

You have a nice list there - I was intrigued by the Maiden as I am big fan of their pre 90's stuff and I found that their latest was actually a 2006 release. I will have to check that one out for sure.

How to tell when you have finally become "old":

The only album I've even HEARD all of from 2007 is Year Zero from NIN. I was kinda disappointed by it, but I still bought it. I don't even know if the radio stations around here have even played much from this year.

The five I listened to the most this year that were actually released this year (as opposed to say, 'Get Evens' by The Evens which I played the crap out of all year, but which came out in November 2006 or 'Strawberries' by The Damned) were probably:

Grinderman - Grinderman
Floratone - Floratone
Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
Jesu - Conqueror
Balkan Beat Box - Nu*Med

Biggest disappointment: Gogol Bordello - Super Taranta!
If they had cut about 15 minutes off the last record and mixed those with the best of the new album, they would have had two great ones back to back. As it is, they have a great one and an ok one.

Also disappointing: New Pornographers and Wilco.

Best album I haven't listened to nearly enough: The Good, The Bad and The Queen.

Still haven't heard: Radiohead, Plant/Krauss, probably a whole bunch more.

Record I don't have yet but I expect might crack the top five: the Chuck Dukowski Sextet album.

At the moment I can only think of three and I don't even think they were released this year (is that the criteria for a best of list or is stuff you;ve been listening to in 2007?). I'll update as I as think of a couple more.

#1 record this year is the rough mix of Craig Craigstofferson's "A Final Blaze of Glory". IMMEDIATELY go and buy this record. Craig Elkins was the lead singer/songwriter for the band Huffamoose (Interscope), and this album is SPECTACULAR!!!!!

Shaver: Unshaven - Live At Smith's Old Bar. Eddy Shaver RULES!!!! I've heard of Eddy for years and years but never checked him out because I mistakenly assumed he was a Stevie Ray rip-off. WRONG!!! Eddy is one THEE BADDEST guitar players that's ever picked up a guitar. Read it again, AS GOOD AS ANYONE ever!!! That's a bold statement but it is beyond true.

That's all I got so far but believe me that's more than enough!!!

RIP, too, 8 years, tomorrow.:(

I had the great pleasure of seeing him play on that tour (1994, the record is '95), and even got a T-Shirt autographed by Billy Joe - noteworthy as it's the only autograph I have ever asked for in my life. (I bought the T-shirt and then got to talking to him after the show and popped the question. I wore the shite out of that shirt, too, and still have the raggedy remains.) Did you notice that Brendan O'Brian is the hot second guitarist on the record? (Not when I saw them.) Eddy actually has a couple of vocal turns on the posthumous releases of '04 and '05; one of my fave players.

The one thing that always gets me when I read through threads like this is the multitude of "I can't think of five good albums that were released this year" types of responses.

I've been a lifelong hardcore music geek that is always actively digging into what's happening. In spite of the fact that I can feel this waning a bit as I get a bit older with some changing tastes, I still am overwhelmed by the amount of music that is out there. Folks that don't find music they like are simply not looking or bogged down in apathy as far as I'm concerned. Or, given we're on a recording forum, perhaps they're simply too abosrbed with making their own music...which is cool. You skip past the commercial stuff and the higher profile semi-indie stuff (Wilco, Spoon, Decemberists, etc.) and there's massive amounts of musical activity. It doesn't even take that much effort to dig into what's out there with the land of the world wide web at hand. Just go to some sites like Aquarius Records, Forced Exposure, Dusty Groove, maybe even Parasol for indy stuff and browse through their new release archives. The fact is there's thousands of interesting recordings being released. Yeah, not everything is going to be to one's taste, but still...

So...I'm just going to say that I can't put together a list cuz there's simply too MUCH... 8) Shit, I've found five great records of 2007 in the last few weeks!

I agree man. I am 34 and I feel like a lifetime has passed since I was 24 and truly wanted to be a rock star and would spend every waking moment living and breathing contemporary music scene. Now that I have grown up and accepted the obvious I still follow new music as much as ever and I cannot stand it when people say "all the good songs have been written" or something in that vein. I mean sure the Beatles will ALWAYS be the greatest, I can live with that but check these lists people- so much great stuff. 2004 was still better, but C'mon live a little in the present...sorry to come down like this.

Yeah, pre 90's Maiden was great and the new album is almost equally great. It sounds very raw, not produced at all and very unlike the other Maiden stuff. also, even though they have THREE guitarists, the arrangements are still great and work along with lot's of great drumming and weird time things. Totally recommend it if you haven't heard it.

My friend gave me Dr. Dog after seeing them open for Wilco and I immediately fell in love with that album.

I agree. Totally. I still listen to a lot of older music. But, it's just sad to see so many people not even be able to come up with ANY new music that they like. It's also sad to see so many lists populated with mediocre albums from artists that peaked in the 90s.

I can relate to holding on to things that shaped who you are. I just can't grasp letting that get in the way of a genuine curiosity for finding new things.

As far as finding new music I don't know. I agree with that Albini quote, "Music is not a spectator sport, you have to actively seek out good music" or whatever it was, but I had a really hard time this year, harder than most in finding albums that really grabbed me.

I am sure they are out there, but damn how many pretentious Pitchfork Media reviews can one man read? Paste Magazine, hanging at the local record store and checking out the listening stations, internet radio, cruising itunes, talking to friends, playing with new bands, I did all that this year and more. I mean I don't think it was for a lack of trying on my part but I still didn't find much this year that I could personally really latch on to. I could do a top five (and two of those were from 2006), maybe a top ten, but beyond that I don't know. I have absolutely been digging into the back catalogs of bands that I really love to fill in the holes.
