I'm no Smashmouth fan, but I don't get what is so bad about this. Seriously. Other than the edit that needs to be cleaned up in the chorus that's been cut and pasted, it sounds pretty standard to me. Sorry, this is no Tape of Only Linda.
I'm surprised how little headphone bleed there is actually.

I dunno Roger... I'm not sure how much I like hearing the snot inside that guy's sinus cavity from all the heavy (and SLOW) compression on that vocal.Rodgre wrote:I'm no Smashmouth fan, but I don't get what is so bad about this. It's really not as bad as Linda though, you're right. The editing is actually pretty bad overall - ghost doubles on the entrances, a number of clicks and pops - it surprises me that what is ostensibly an expensive, major-label recording would have such flagrant errors.
...although it probably shouldn't.

Lovely Linda McCartney's live vocal tracks, I believe.

Coming to the dude's defense .... Granted the music sucks, but it's no worse than, say, some stupid 60's vocal track about middle eastern religion or everybody needing love or whatever. I remember watching The Kids are Allright and Peter Townsend saying on the interview about how lousy the Beatles vocals were without the music. The smashmouth dude at least sounds like he does on the record (which I never listened to, except for about 3 seconds on the radio, until I quickly turned the station).

Ummm... I don't think that the Beatles (well... sorry Ringo) were bad singers. Isolated tracks sound strange, yes, but that dude from Smashmouth leaves something to be desired. Although, there is no Autotune, right? That's saying something.

Yeah -- the dude's definitely not in the same class as the Beatles, but as I said, he sounds about as mediocre as he does on the record, which is about as good/bad as most pop singers. There aren't too many rock singers who can really sing all that great, anyway, and I'd say that Smashmouth dudes probably about in the middle of the talent scale for crappy flash-in-the-pan pop singers.

Yes, that is fair enough.Colin F. wrote:I'm really not a Smashmouth fan at all, but at least you can hear that this guy is really going for it and giving it everything that he's got. People generally respond well to that type of energy in a performance and that could explain why they've sold as many records as they have.
