Nine Inch Nails partially FREE album (or spend $5)

Post by TapeOpLarry » Mon Mar 03, 2008 7:16 pm

New album. 1.8 hrs of music. With that much filler something better be for free... I'm actually listening to it and it's kinda fun. Little bit of Eno going on so far.

It's also worth pointing out that the deluxe editions come with multitrack stems of all the songs for sampling and remixing, just like the singles from With Teeth and Year Zero did. This time, however, it's licensed under Creative Commons -- you can read all about that in the last issue!

Interesting. I finally got around to listening to his project with Saul Williams. I'm not sure about it yet. Parts I do like though. It's pretty obvious Trent had a big part on the album, especially in using his distortion boxes that 'nobody else could ever get their hands on'.

I'll have to check this new NiN out. Hopefully it's better than the last album I bought from him.

what kind of distortion boxes did he use that no one else can get their hands on?

I got that from an interview with him years ago. I think it was a paper I wrote on him in high school, so over ten years ago. He didn't mention what it was, but apparently it was custom built for him. He was just boasting that no one could ever get his distortion sound.

I've been kinda digging this album. It's all instrumental stuff. I'm not sure I'd be jazzed if I paid a 3 CD price for it, but for $5 I'm getting more than that out of the music.

Yeah I'm really digging it too. I love all the sounds they were able to get on this record. Very cool and creative.

There's a pretty cool article at Wired about NIN and his weird secret code games he plays with his fans. He's quite the visionary with this stuff (most of which is actually devised by a company that does this for many corporate clients)

I paid $5 for the full download version of this album, in Apple Lossless format, and I am very happy with it.

I think the best thing about this, though, goes way beyond the actual music. The most important issue here is the message that Mr. Reznor is sending to other musicians and their fans: you DON'T NEED the major labels! With a little trial and error (Radiohead's experiment with the online distribution of "In Rainbows," for example), independent online distribution can (and definitely will) be built into a viable tool, and is, in my opinion, the future of the industry. As you can see here, Ghosts I-IV made $1.6 Million in one week! Kudos to Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails for giving the future of the record industry a kick in the pants.

The free bit has made me a NIN fan, which I thought might never happen. I am about to actually go buy the rest of the set because the first bit is so friggin' cool.

I also like that he gave us a huge pdf with amazing nature and studio porn to look at as I listen. That's a big improvement over the spartan Radiohead free files. Also, high bitrate!

Also: Adrian Belew!

I am absolutely impressed by this whole deal. I hope others copy this method of getting listeners excited about their stuff. Wow.

Weird. The free download purchasers get a pdf, though, when i bought the download, there was no pdf included?
Am i missing something here? literally?

There should've been a PDF included, as well as several wallpapers and other images. It's all included in the .zip
