Wilco - The Lonely 1

Post by leftofthedial » Fri Jun 27, 2008 5:25 am

I picked up my first Wilco album last week. "Being There". Now I've heard me a wilco tune or two in my day, but the song "The Lonely 1" really dogs me as one I've heard somebody else do before. At first, I assumed Wilco was covering it, but the date of the album and credits indicate that probably somebody else has covered it and that's what I'm hearing in my head.

It could be some band I recorded covered it and I was just too ignorant at the time, or perhaps it's been covered by an indie or even mainstream band. Anyway, I'm positive the version I keep flash backing to in my head is much more uptempo than the Wilco version. And the first time I heard the Wilco version, I knew the lyrics that were coming. Especially the ilne,

"I've checked the phone, no messages on. I play the ones from yesterday"

So I'm 100% positive I've heard it before by somebody else. Perhaps I should check to see if a band I played in covered it? HMMMM...

Anyway, anybody know what version is stuck in my head....

BTW, pretty cool song.

Google brings back Wilco and a bunch of ass-clowns covering the song on you tube. Nothing about anybody covering it for real though.

It's also on the Chelsea Walls soundtrack. Sung by someone other than Jeff, but I'm not sure who.

That disc also has a killer cover of Jealous Guy by Little Jimmy Scott.

The verse melody and the changes are reminiscent of something else I've heard a zillion times (I am not sure what). There's that descending bassline that could be note-for-note with some old 1970s SoCal FM chestnut, right?

Robert Sean Leonard sings it on the soundtrack... the guy from Dead Poets Society and that show House.

Yeah, I found a youtube clip of the movie, but that's not the version I'm hearing in my head either, but thanks, a good try for sure!

The "take the guitar player for a ride" lyrics in Misunderstood are from a Pere Ubu song, and are credited as such in Being There's album's credits. Point being, if they lifted the Lonely 1 lyrics from someone, I'm sure they'd have no problem saying so somewhere in the liner notes.

Lyrics, not familiar. Melody/changes/bassline: vaguely familiar. There are a lot of songs out there so it probably resembles something. Dunno what.

I read somewhere that song's about Paul Westerberg. Makes sense to me but who knows--makes for an interesting listen though.

I'm about 100% sure it's all Wilco.
