First LP was Son of Schmilsson.
I had singles, though, including some Nilsson Schmilsson tunes. In my naivete, I figured I'd heard what was worthwhile there, and went for the sequel. Once I realized that good stuff lie beyond the material getting airplay, I grabbed the first one. Kids!

The first time I recall having gone to buy music with my own money was something by the Exploited on cassette, I think.
The first time I bought CDs I picked up Nevermind, Gish, and the Joshua Tree.
My first vinyl was after that, and was probably OMD's Junk Culture.

The first album I bought with my own money was Synchronicity. I know the first CD I owned was Wish You Were Here, but it was given to me as a gift. I think the first CD I bought was Tubular Bells because it had just been issued in the US at the time.

we're doing all formats and mentioning dates?
the ELO cassette i mentioned earlier was in 1981 and the Pink Floyd LP was in 1979.
my first compact disc purchase was in 1986 and it was Rush - Exit...Stage Left.
i never bought anything on 8-track or MD, tho i have listened to the quad versions of both DSOTM and Meddle on a good 8-track quad system and am still floored by how amazing it sounded.
or maybe it was just the hash my next door neighbour's dad was burning as incense.

Yeah I wasn't too sure which format people would be using for their first purchase

First vinyl: a 45 of "Jet" by Wings. It broke on the handlebars of my ten-speed, on the way home from Caldor's.
First cassette: Foreigner "4".
