Awesome album. Got tuned on to it a few years ago.
The magic is the banjo. Ha. Never thought I'd rave about banjo.

And not to be confused with the 80's Monks.

Thanks, Hyde! A bunch of the older links had been pulled down.

Anyone seen the documentary?

Thanks for reminding me about this album! I have been meaning to check it out for years, never got around to it. I searched for it a few years ago when there was no itunes; couldn't find it except in a weird amazon ultra-expensive import or something. Now I bet I can find a copy somewhere. Will get back to the group after I've checked it out.

Great stuff. The live footage is especially exciting.

Someone played "I Hate You" on the jukebox at the bowling alley in "The Big Lebowski".

It's a real shame that the two guys who were (for me) the most compelling have both passed away in the last few years. One of them was still kind of clinging to music stardom and one of them couldn't have cared less.

I'd love to find one of those giant tambourines like the ones in that live footage.

The Monks are such a great band. That record is a classic piece of music history. Sure it's a "garage band", but it's so much more. One of those rare examples of a truly unique vision.

There's a book called 'Black Monk Time' that was written by, I believe, the bass player, and it is a really amazing rock 'n' roll document that gives their music a whole 'nother level of appreciation. Words like 'riveting' and 'compelling' are totally in order when describing the book. Not only is it a great book about the epic rise, mutation and fall of a forgotten corner of punk rock history but it's just a great book about the '60s rock scene. Now I think I'm going to have to read it again. Such a great story!

I had no idea there was a book on the Monks. It seems like they were a bunch of pretty smart, and eccentric cookies. The content would surely be there, and it sounds like the writing is pretty good.
I love to read it..I'll keep my eyes peeled for a copy.

They're a great band. I saw them at the reunion in Las Vegas a few years ago, with all the original members except the drummer. At least 95% as much energy as the record, even about 40 years later. . .

dag yo, I was just listening to this a few weeks ago at a friend's place.
At first it was just background music, but then "I Hate You" came on and it started driving me crazy because I recognized it from somewhere.
After massive head scratching and brain coaxing, I realized it was covered by The Fall on their Extricate album. (which was one of my favorite records in high school)

I had never heard the original...or even realized it was a cover. "Oh How to Do Now" is also on there. They are named "Black Monk Theme 1 and 2," respectively.

Anyhoo...that whole Monks album kicks my ass. very forward thinking.
bigger and better....sooner than later

I've had the idea for a long time to front a garage band with a banjo.

I didn't realize It had already been done. 8)

EDIT- Also, I can see where The Hives got ALOT of their vibe from.
