The Wrecking Crew

Post by cgarges » Sun Nov 30, 2008 8:38 pm

I just got to check out a screening copy of The Wrecking Crew documentary that Denny Tedesco did. Really well-done! Great interviews and a bit of footage of some Gold Star sessions. Anyone else around here seen it yet?

Haven't seen it, but why Hal Blaine isn't mentioned here at TapeOp at least in every other post is light years beyond me. Way beyond.

Looks like a great film.

I remember hearing this from someone:

?One of my biggest disappointments in life was finding out that a dozen of my favorite drummers were Hal Blaine.?

I'm pretty sure it's not officially available on DVD yet, but it's being screened at some film festivals and stuff.

I was lucky enough to see this at the AFM Local 47 Union Hall here in Los Angeles. Most of the people interviewed in the movie were there: Hal Blaine, Carol Kaye, etc. One young bass player went up to Carol and said that he played bass - she said "Did you learn using my instructional materials?" The poor kid was baffled, laughed, and walked away.

Hal Blaine got up and told some bad jokes after the screening.

Just saw this again and thought I'd remind everyone that it exists. It's really, really terrific.

this was a great film too. just like "standing in the shadows of motown" and "muscle shoals" it helps to highlight the undersung musicians, arrangers, producers, engnineers, etc. who really made the hits what they are.
