Nobody owns a melody. You can whistle anything you want to. You can play anything you want to. But, someone, somewhere, who thought of that melody before you did, just might (for a certain period of time) own the exclusive right to market and sell music made from that melody. No big deal. I don't find it at all restrictive to my own creativity.

I'm going to build a machine that creates all possible melodies, arranges them into 3 minute songs, copyright them, then releases them on iTunes so that anyone releasing a new song will have to pay me for the rights. Then I'm going to patent the whole process and wait for the money to come rolling in... or did Clear Channel already try something like that?

Is it my browser, or did someone delete a post. And if they did, why?
I don't remember Chris' "We have a winner" post being at the top of a page.

I didn't delete anything, but nor do I remember that post being in that position. Actually I thought this thread was only at about 3 pages last time I saw it. Maybe somebody added length to a previously existing post.
EDIT - It's all RefD's fault! He added two lines to his signature (a new quote about 'options', and then a blank line) and since he has been pretty active in this thread it bumped everything around!

Hey guys,
I merged the two topics on the same subject that were in both my forums. That's why stuff looks different. All the old material is still there.
Carry on.

Oh, no! I was fielding two slightly differently nuanced arguments at the two different threads, as a hedging strategy! Nadgers!

You're wrong in both places so it doesn't make a difference, really.

I'm trying to decide whether to contribute to the off-topic Intellectual Property Rights part of the thread, or the off-topic Monty Python part of the thread.
...
I can't decide. So I'll just say "Coldplay sucks" and move along.

Stairway to Heaven / Fresh Garbage
and....NO! I'm not saying that a Led Zep song is garbage. The guitar into to Stairway to Heaven was "borrowed" almost completely intact from Spirit's Fresh Garbage.....as far as I know, no infringement suit was ever brought on any of Led Zep's alternative author aquisition antics.
And.....what's that got to do with Joe & Coldplay.....absolutely nothin!..say it again!
thank you & carry on

Jake Holmes successfully sued them for Dazed and Confused but was never paid or credited, or so I've read on the internet.
