It is, but that is still better than a ton of the crap that is out there...I'm looking at you Vampire Weekend and TV on the Radio.

took that list, copied and pasted. its now my "get these CDs" list.

Also, glad to see a few mentions of Nick Cave - poor guy seems really under appreciated in the US.

Marnie Stern - This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That

The Dodos - Visiter

^because they have not been mentioned and rock my ass off like no other shit this year, highly recomended.

plus some big ol bump action on:

sigur ros
deerhoof
mogwai
black mountain
grails

and for real for real, bon iver, that record has not left my head at all this year.

i'll probably think of more later but this is what i got off the top of my head. but damn strait 2008 was a year for delicious music.
the tape is rolling, the ones and zeros are... um... ones and zeroing.

Was it just me or did the swords album sound like it was recorded in a basement? One of my friends lent me this CD and I just assumed at first the recorded it themselves in a basement...I was really surprised this was a legitimate studio record?

+100 for the Mars Volta Bedlam in Goliath, the drums on that album own so much, there drummer has to be one of the best in the business right now.

Vijay Iyer - Tragicomic

And +1 for the Constantines (my favorite rock record of the year), TV on the Radio, Bon Iver, and Blitzen Trapper.

Theres a few I like but need to listen to more before I give them a best of rating, like Walkmen, Department of Eagles

And there's a few things people here mentioned I didn't even know about, like a new one from Ornette Coleman & a silver mt zion. Have to check those out.

Holy shit I have to get this record. Saw him last night the Troc and was blown away.

Cool to see Greg Weeks on here. He's a Philly brother and a huge talent. He's also really really nice to chat music with.

I feel like didn't get out record shopping much this year, however I plan on picking up a lot of stuff from this thread in the coming weeks.

My List:

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
Beck - Modern Guilt
Brendan Canning /Broken Social Scene - Something For All of Us
Kelly Stoltz - Circular Sounds
The Week That Was - The Week That Was
Black Keys
Jamie Lidell

Bands whose 2008 releases I haven't heard completely yet but who have my attention:

The Broken West
Fleet Foxes
Shannon McArdle
Wye Oak
Ray LaMontagne

18th Dye

Honorable mention that hasn't come out yet (friends of mine, too!):

Audible - In Simple Intervals

I can't recommend it enough. I still listen front to back, over and over 8 months later. May well be in my all-time top 5. Phenomenal playing and great singing. Sounds to me like it was recorded on various tape machines--which likely could use some servicing but which only adds to its timelessness.
