15 Indispensable Songs

Post by BenjaminWells » Wed Jan 07, 2009 10:24 am

I received a gift card for $15 at iTunes. Woo hoo! I'm rich!

Please offer 3 (brutally hard I know) must have songs and give your reason. I'm open to all genres, all eras, but what I'm looking for are iconic songs that represent a genre or era to you. You know, stuff no self respecting music person should miss.

Though I'd probably change my three songs in five minutes, as of this very moment, I'd say:

God Only Knows - Beach Boys...reinforces, for me, the beauty of a simple lyric, beautifully sung.
I See a Darkness - Bonnie 'Prince' Billy...because it's the best study in dynamics that I know of.
Take Me to the River - Al Green...it's smooth, it rocks, it's got incredible musicians all over it, and it always sounds like it's going to explode from the speakers at any moment.

Top of my head:

Stay a Little Longer - Bob Wills & The Texas Playboys. Get the version from "Encore" if possible.

I Want You Back - The Jackson 5. Fantastic arrangement, great vocals.

Doris Smiling - Donny Who Loved Bowling. Because I need the money.
"Jeweller, you've failed. Jeweller."

"Lots of people are nostalgic for analog. I suspect they're people who never had to work with it." ? Brian Eno

I'm playing that tune on a show in DC Friday night. Gotta love it.

Forgive me musicians and recordists, for I am about to sin... I don't friggen' get it.. That abnoxious number drives me nuts on so many levels. In fact it frustrates me hysterically that that horrible excuse for a song is so well liked. I'm sorry.

Oh..

no, no wait a minute..

Yeah that one's OK.. I was thinking of Cheap Trick surrender.. God that song sucks.. Whatever you do, don't waste any of your gift card on that.. My bad.. As you were..

that is SO weird...

when I first read the song title, "Surrender" by Cheap Trick was the song I started singing in my head.. then I realized it too, just as you did in your post.

Great minds think alike... and so do we.

Thanks for the songs friends.

I pray for you, my child. Clearly you're a lost soul. That song is fantastic.
