Paul Pe?a "New Train"

Post by honkyjonk » Sat Mar 14, 2009 10:59 am

Everybody should check this album out. Paul Pe?a was that guy that was in the documentary called Ghengis Blues who was from San Francisco and learned how to throat sing.

This album however, was released in '73. It's absolutely a Soul Music masterpiece. I should say, 'San Francisco' soul music, so yeah, there are strings and shit, the drummer from Moondance, and even Jerry Garcia on pedal steel on one song.

It's totally one of the best sounding recordings I've ever heard, but that's beside the point. The players on it are just ridiculously tasty. And Pe?a had one of those voices that you'd give your left ball for. It's the only album he made too, outside of the throatsinging stuff.

That movie is one of my top 5 favs of all time. :)
Also, that album kicks major ass. Paul Pena was a great musician that never got the credit he deserved.

I picked this album up probably 12 years or so ago when I heard it playing at Tower Records (remember those?).

Agreed, it's a fantastic sounding recording with great songs. Good stuff.

Hah Hah,

I just re-read my post and noticed I had mis-typed San Francisco as 'San Frandisco'

Wha? I'm totally gonna try to make a San Frandisco song now.

Went on Amaazon after reading this and bought it mega cheap. I only got to spend a bit of time with it, and it is great. I love the ultra warm production. Seems to occupy the same weird niche that Tony Joe White and J J Cale occupy in that its not soul, nor blues, nor country, nor rock. Very much a keeper!

Cool, I'll check that album out. I was just talking about Paul last night with a friend.

As it hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet, I'll say it: Paul Pena wrote "Jet Airliner" (which I see is on this album), the same as covered by Steve Miller.

I prefer Paul's version of the song.

97% of the time I also prefer a nice birthday cake to eating Twinkies. However, in Paul's case, the sales of those Twinkies kept him (marginally) afloat for years, allowing him to do some cool non-commercial projects like, say, learning Tuvan throat-singing...
