1982 (a covers album of songs from the year I was born)

Post by austin » Tue Jun 23, 2009 7:01 pm

So I recently finished a record of my own songs (which I posted about separately here) but I was concurrently working on a mini-album of covers -- all of the songs for which were originally released in the year of my birth: 1982.

The songs I recorded for it are:
"The Cutter" (Echo & the Bunnymen)
"Used Cars" (Springsteen)
"Almost Blue" (Elvis Costello)
"Don't Renege On Our Love" (Richard & Linda Thompson)
"Gardening at Night" (R.E.M.)
"Senses Working Overtime" (XTC)

Even though this was just done for fun, I think it came out really well -- my version of "The Cutter" might actually be my favorite recording I have ever made! All of it was done on my Tascam 488 cassette 8-track.

You can download the whole thing for free (or, "The Cutter" is streamable if you want to sample first) at AustinStahl.net. My album of originals is there too, at the top -- scroll down a bit for 1982.

Nice choice of songs! I like the double-tracking on "Gardening".

Thanks! It was a challenge figuring out the words to that one... :)
