Coming Out: I'm in love with Lionel Ritchie's All night long

Post by niccolo gallio » Tue Aug 04, 2009 10:15 am

Well, the title pretty sums it up.
I like so much the board here that I'd like to open my heart.
I've played in death metal bands, Zappa cover bands, overtone singing choirs and marching jazz bands, and recorded very different types of music, but there was always something in the back of my mind that was tickling, and then I've heard it on the radio again after 25 years and suddenly it all appeared so simple: I love that song, especially the end part with the aggressive trumpets and the fake cheering crowd.

C'mon, you can't possibly believe what's written on my avatar..

It's very good. So is "I Just Called to Say I Love You", another 80's guilty pleasure of mine.

Exactly the opposite, I suspect.

I bought that 45 when it came out, but don't hold the same kind of sentimental love for it that I do "Break My Stride" by Matthew Wilder or "Something About You" by Level 42. I was also uber-disappointed to find out that the chants in the middle are utter bullshit. To try so hard to go after this Cuban kind of thing and then make up nonsense words for the middle of your song is pretty jive to me. He could have done it in Wolof or pig latin or Wookie and it would have been a thousand times cooler.

"Night Shift" was pretty cool, though.

"Night Shift" was pretty bad. Wasn't that after Lionel left the Commodores too? I seem to remember they hired another guy with a pencil-thin mustache to take his place.

Crap. No it's stuck in my head.

My 80's guilty listening pleasures include "True" by Spandau Ballet. Don't tell my indie rock friends.

I heard "Jeepster" this AM on 'XRT - that was way cool!

We saw a coverband last weekend and my daughter decided "Brickhouse" is one of the best songs ever written.

T-Rex is most certainly not a guilty pleasure. Actually I'm not even sure I believe in guilty pleasures. It is so much cooler to unabashedly rock out to whatever you like than to pretend you only like whatever is supposed to be cool. All night long is definitely in my itunes library. 8)

I read somewhere that Lionel Richie is huge in Iraq and other Arab nations. One of the reasons is that he is ethnically "vague looking", and could be of many nationalities and that his music is generally positive. He also gets paid a lot of money to perform in those countries. Also, that during the "shock and awe" beginning portion of the 2nd Iraq war folks in Baghdad were cranking "All Night Long" out of their apartment and house windows. Quite an image.

I will second Spandau Ballet's "True". Simply Red's "Holding Back The Years" is another one. As a side note, next time you hear Duran Durans "Rio", listen closely to the bass playing, that guy can really play!

Hello?
You just gotta love a college professor stalking a blind student, who in turn thinks he looks like Lou Ferrigno, but still wants to hook up.

Also, a huge BIlly Ocean fan here. Listen to Loverboy while you muse it over. You can't tell me that don't make you want to start grooving. It's like Star Wars on crack. I persoanlly like the Jawa creatures giving hand waves. Ohh...oooh...oooh....oh!

But my all time guilty pleasure is Hall and Oates. You just can't go wrong with those two. They are coming here next month and tickets will be had. Personal favorite of the week. No Can Do!
