Neil Young - "cowgirls in the sand"
I love this song and the entire album. Everything sounds so raw. Does anyone have any info on the recording of this classic?

Read Neil Young's bio, Shakey. I cannot recommend it enough. Lots of insight into how Neil records, how he directs his bands live and in the studio, sexdrugsrocknroll, etc.
I have the utmost respect for Mr. Young.

Just (re)read the chapter on this for about the hundredth time the other day. What strikes me the most about the sound of this record (and I'm sure others as well) is how up front everything is. The guitars are just in your face. David Briggs, at least in the beginning, was into bypassing whatever board they had completely and going directly to tape, so I'm sure that has something to do with it. The guitar interplay between Neil and Danny is mind-blowing as well. I first got into this record and After The Goldrush in high school in the mid-90s and it was always fun for me to mess with the L & R channels to try and isolate the guitars to hear exactly what Danny or Neil or the rest of the band was doing. This worked especially well with Southern Man cause the lead guitar is panned hard right. Very cool.
