David Bowie - Space Oddity
I'm recording a cover of it tomorrow for a TV commercial gig. Goddamn there's a lot of chords in this tune! I'd forgotten how well put together it is. It keeps switching key from major to minor but the melody just holds it all together and makes it seem simple and easy (kind of like the Beatles rocking an odd time signature so hard you never notice it's odd).

Spoon - Transference
Been listening to the latest Spoon release "Transference"
I love the sound of this record and as always with a Spoon disc - I love all the little studio noises and between song mystery. I love Jim Eno's drum sounds too. I always forget how sort of "dance" oriented they are for an indie rock band - some good grooves going on...

My wife bought me a few new cd's for my birthday.
Josh Rouse - El Turista
Not sure how I feel about this. It's a bit more in the Harry Connick/Michael Buble category than I venture. His voice sounds "unique" enough in english....but it's kinda bizzare in spanish. The record sounds beautiful, great arrangements and what not, but it's just not my style. His voice sounds "unique" enough in english....it's kinda bizzare in spanish.
Radio Dept. - Clinging to a scheme
Interesing record. Some pretty cool lo-fi sounding production, with sampled drums, and of coarse tons of sythns. It's not great....but it's an enjoyable listen. I just wish he'd opt for a little variety on his vocal sound here and there.

I love the alternative style percussion/drum tracks this tune uses - shaker, bass drum, sleigh bells etc.

(crappy YouTube link might be hard to hear...)

Brian Eno-Music for Films
Appreciating its pre ambient ambience, and its actual sounds instead of samples.
Drive By Truckers-Southern Rock Opera (disc 1)
Funny story, I had wanted to check out the Flaming Lips, so while in the city (SF) bought a double album I'd heard was good used at Amoeba records. Whomever returned it initially had apparently accidently swapped out a similar colored disc 1 from their Drive By Truckers' "Southern Rock Opera" double album. Later, when "Three Great Alabama Icons" came on, I became a fan instantly.
