Mix input... Beach Boys, Zombies, Left Banke influenced

Post by starlightwalker » Wed Feb 03, 2010 8:53 am

Fellow Tape-oppers,

We just completed initial mixes on my new record and wanted to get some input/feedback 6 tracks. I'm especially looking at how the vocals are sitting.. too up front, too low.. etc. Any advice and perceptions are appreciated. My sounds is very late 60s Beach Boys, Beatles, Zombies with big dense orchestrations and arangements. A few quiter ones too.

Larry reviewed my last album positively in the magazine.

Thanks in advance, I'm grateful. Still unmastered.

I keep meaning to check this out. When I get home today and can use my studio monitors I'll give it a listen.

I'm a huge fan of The Zombies, escpecailly Oddessy and the Oracle, which has some really creative use of reverb and placement of harmonies in the mix.

til then....

I've been rocking these on my itunes. I've tried to think of something to say in regards to mixes. But I've just been enjoying the songs and don't have anything constructive to say. Other than they sound really good. The subtle organ parts are a personal favorite!

Thanks for the kind words, please keep the feedback coming. I've spent the last two years writing and recording this record... most of the overdubs at home and really want it be as good as it can be. Petsounds, Odyssey and Oracle, Sgt Pepper are all influences.

Listened to 4 of the tunes. I like it...and the mix is pretty good on most everything. Vocals sit in the mix well and the arrangements leave space for all the instruments.
No real criticism either. Good work so far.

You've got a new fan. Great mixes too, like everyone else I've got no criticism. The songs feel familiar in such a good way.

No criticisms here, this sounds great. I just wanted to mention how much I love the strings on "she's bound to get hurt".

These mixes are great. The vocals sit perfectly. I love the double tracking. And the drums are terrific. Perfect for the song.

Piano mixing advice...

Post by starlightwalker » Tue Feb 09, 2010 9:37 am

The only concern I have os that the piano sounds a little dull and flat on these tracks. We recorded a grand with two 414s. The piano is mixed fairly spread out. A bit of natural reverb from the room we cut in. Would a bit ofplate open it up? EQ? Any advice?
