Spring 2011 Record Release Roundup

Post by fossiltooth » Thu Jun 16, 2011 5:57 pm

Hey all - Here's my foray into straight up record reviews for SonicScoop. Based on the some of the tastes I hear expressed on the TOMB I think some of you guys might dig it. As a studio rat and journalist, I listen to a lot of new releases. These are the twelve from this Spring that best broke through the noise. Please enjoy, and keep me posted on the things that make you stop listen.

8)

And may I suggest a listen to Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears latest, as well as The Twilight Singers' ...

Personally, I been digging the garage psychadelia of Steve Wynn and the Miracle 3's latest, also.

And then there's Bunky Moon!

Suggest away! The only one of those I know is Bunky Moon. Feel free to add to the thread. Just pop in some links if you can.

Yeah, yeah, allmusic is great and all. But what, specifically, is coming out now that you're into?

Chris Thile and Michael Daves, Sleep With One Eye Open: two guys in the room playing and singing brother duet style bluegrass music with attitude. Recorded at Jack White's studio.

Shameless plug, but The Black Dots of Death if you like really different heavy music.

Also Austra's debut album if you like electro.

Eh, see my above post?

I cited allmusic because you asked for links ...

In retrospect, I s'pose you were referring to band links?

Thanks for this!
I was recently feeling very down on new music in general, at least what I've been exposed to; so it's great to get a few points in the right directions!

The new Fleet Foxes, Helplessness Blues, sounds phenomenal. Wounded Rhymes by Lykke Li is another good one. Big, big reverb.

Although this is a rerelease of a tape put out last year, this 12" 45 has been rocking my world lately: Angel Olsen, Strange Cactihttp://www.batheticrecords.com/strange_cacti_vinyl/

I've been diggin' the latest Drive-By Truckers, and also Booker T. Jones.

Slightly older, I find Lanois' project Black Dub kinda flawed but interesting - great musicianship but overly-ambient in places. Trixie Whitley's gotta terrific voice, but it's a bit under-used here.

Eddie Vedders voice is THE WORST. Who is Lady Gaga?

Booker T stuff is sweet! I just listened to "Progress" and that song rules! I'm definitely going to check out the full length!
