Anyone Else Into "Sound Opinions"??

Post by tonewoods » Wed Jul 06, 2011 10:39 am

Love this show...

Hour-long discussions of music, with the first 10-15 minutes or so devoted to a dissection of the business side of the music biz...

"Based in Chicago, Sound Opinions is hosted by Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot, two of the finest and best-recognized pop music writers in the nation. For over a decade they were dedicated competitors at Chicago?s two daily newspapers?Jim at the Chicago Sun-Times and Greg at the Chicago Tribune. Today, Jim writes about music for WBEZ.org and teaches criticism at Columbia College.

Every week, Sound Opinions fires up smart and spirited discussions about a wide range of popular music, from indie rock to classic rock, hip hop to R&B, and every genre under the sun."

You can subscribe to their podcast, or listen to past shows here...

Curious as to whether or not others on TOMB are fans...
I learn a lot listening to these guys...

I listened to ton of shows after you posted a link awhile back.
It's a cool show and their archive can keep ya busy for weeks.
I like learning about bands that I missed the boat on (the feelies for example), and hearing their perspective on bands/ or record labels that I did pay attention to.
It's weird for me to hear things referred to that are 20 years old, I'm like geez time flys!
Some of my favorites are the shows on weird instruments, and their dissection of career phases, song writing styles, technology used etc.

Whoops...

I thought I brought this up awhile back, but did a search for Sound and Opinions and obviously got a bazillion threads...

The memory ain't what it used to be...

Anyway, worth the redux...
Great shows with Tony Visconti, Robert Wyatt, Jon Brion and tons of other folks....

I'm glad you brought it up again, as i had forgotten about it.
I totally dug that Robert Wyatt interview, I have the old Soft Machine records and never knew anything about them or him. Tons of great stuff

Oh, yeah, I'm a fan of "Sound Opinions". It's the only podcast I have set to automatically download new episodes to my phone.

I like Sound Opinions. I have some quotes from their host Jim DeRogatis in a new article about Pitchfork too. He tends to be critical of their style, and makes some good points about it for sure.

Another NPR show TapeOppers might like: Radiolab. One of their hosts just won a MacArthur "Genius Grant", which is pretty neat. It's a science show, but it's very musical. Check out some of their archives too! A lot of great stuff in there.

I think NPR's got the best podcasts around at the moment. Sound Opinions is one of the better ones for popular music shows for sure. Not to snobby, not too lowbrow. They're almost like Siskel and Ebert at their prime.

I used to listen to them when they were only in Chicago on XRT live on Tuesday nights. I've lstened to them maybe twice since they moved to NPR synidication. It's not the same as it was, sadly.

I also used to hear them on XRT, but I'm glad WBEZ/NPR picked up their show.
