Maybe it's just my style of mixing, but I would parallel compress the drums to bring them up a bit. I feel as if they are getting lost in the mix a bit. Just my opinion. I know what some people like drums that are back a bit.

Huh. Canary-themed bands and songs are all-the-rage these days...

I like the material, and it sounds good. The drums are powerful, but sit-back a bit. I personally don't think they're too quiet, but wonder if other mix ingredients are too loud? I'm also wondering about the bass on "Canary;" it's popping right out on my tiny Dell speakers. What does it sound like on headphones or large speakers? Just wondering if you've checked the mixes on multiple sets and systems to check for "translatability?"

Interesting stuff. You seem to harken back to a 60's vibe while simultaneously tapping the 90's Alt. tip and adding your own jazzy spin. Cool.

Thanks for the listen(s)

@ Nick. Thanks. I really appreciate that. It's the thing I'm working on most these days, must be on the right track.

@ ipressrecord I think I do tend to bury the kick drum - or maybe it's more that I always have a lot of stuff happening in the low end and it just gets washed out. I'm trying to not mix the snare as loud these days, as it always seems to fight with the vocal.

I think I will try some parallel compression, I don't do that often for drums....

hmm opening up "canary" to see what I had on the drum bus - and I had no comp at all.. lol. I'll change that.

@Gregg Juke yes the bass on Canary has been really hard to get to translate. Sounds great in headphones, good on my Events, it totally craps out the little radio / i pod dock in my kitchen though if I turn it up. My car stereo got jacked.. lol so I don't even have that to reference right now. I'll see if I can dig up some old computer speakers to check on.

@grendel Thanks man! It helps when you have an amazing bass player that you've been playing and working with off and on for about 16 years.

I definitely understand that everyone mixes to taste. I'd just like more definition from the kick and snare, more driving. Maybe carving out some of the bass gtr around where the kick is located will help, as will increasing the "snap" of the beater hitting the head, which is usually around 2.5K-5K. This way you can feel and hear the kick, it has more definition, and your bass isn't compromised.

Remixed "Letter from a canary"

http://soundcloud.com/james-eure/letter ... nary-remix

Re-arranged a bit in the intro. (ok well, a lot, just a bit over 4 minutes now, how unusually concise for me! lol)

Still struggling with the kick a bit, I don't have a big booming system to test this on, but I think it might be too huge somewhere in the low end, let me know. Clicky kicks just make me shudder, I might need to get closer to that line here though. Next mix I will try a different sample for the kick. I did change to a brighter, dryer snare for this mix.

My "mix room" isn't setup right now (it is also my wood shop and I have a lot of work atm) So this is a headphone mix.
