Frankentracking mix

I posted about "Wimpy drums in a big mix" in the Recording Techniques section, and posted a link (https://soundcloud.com/jhcore/ever-fell-fadeout) to some of the client mix work. This singer/songwriter recorded everything at many, many studios over the country, over a span of several years. The recordings have been in the can for about 9 years, and I'm helping him get them up to snuff. Here's a link to a 4:30 AM mix of a pretty song of his:

I realized that the vocal has SO much bleed from the rest of the band, so I attempted to tame it somewhat. It was really hard to get a gate to sound seamless, so I just used the ambience as much as I could. Unfortunately, this is a departure from the real dry sound the singer/songwriter wanted, but he knows that there are going to be limitations due to the nature of the tracking. But here's the latest stab:
