Jackson Station Recording -

Post by ligeti » Mon Apr 20, 2015 10:32 am

Hello!

A friend of mine asked me to record him performing this song. He performs the acoustic guitar, vocals and harmonica. I added all the rest and recorded the shabang.

What do you think?

I usually record classical musicians so this type of recording is new for me.

Thank you.

Great sounds, but the vocal is all over the place level-wise. I think it needs a pretty big overall boost and then either compress it, or ride the fader, or both. IMO.

^^^ i agree.

this feels like "time out of mind" bob dylan/lanois vibe. i'd grit up the voc a bit to bring
out a little more articulation and bring the whole voc level up and compress so it becomes more of an obvious focal point and so the atmosphere hovers
around it rather than enveloping in.

Thanks. I think you are right. I've never worked with vocals before and I'm not a big fan of compression. I was riding the fader during the final mix so I could avoid using compression. I'll try it.

An opto style compression can be pretty transparent and natural sounding. What software are you mixing with?

Agreed on all points. I love the dynamics of the whole piece, well done. The vocals do need more ooomph, some grit and an LA2A are the ticket.... maybe a bit more upper bass EQ to fill things out a bit.

Any recommendation for a free plug in compressor for OSX?

I haven't used any of the on board compressors in Cubase yet. I could also try one of those.

I updated the mix with compression on the vocals and it sounds much better. The initial link I posted is still good.

Let me know what you think.

Thank you everyone.

You musta compressed the hell out of it to get it to sit like that, but it doesn't sound compressed to me, just, right. It sounds like a record to me.

Snarl:

I did indeed compress the hell out of it.

I've never worked with vocals before, so I got lucky.it seems like everything is easier when one records in stereo.
