Great thread on JHarv bringing the Akai back to life.

Couple facts I learned reading it as well:
U2's Rattle and Hum and Billy Idol's Rebel Yell were recorded on these Akai units.

i believe some Greyboy All Stars stuff was recorded to one as well. Back in my touring days i met a drummer who owned an Akai MG1212 or MG1214. He said it was owned by the Greyboy guys (whom he's friends with) and bought it off them. He said they recorded stuff with it and after listening to their stuff was impressed.

there was a MG14D (rackmount just recorder part of MG1214) on ebay for 150 with the autolocater. broken but send to VST in Pasadena (who repair these) and you could probably have a working machine for cheap. Came with tapes too.

Yep.
The MG1214 that U2 used is hanging on the wall at Sun Studios.
I actually now have my eye on an MG1214. My 1212 has a few functions that aren't working. The tape counter being one of them. That can be a pain.
