Austin Uncharted, new Live in-Studio sessions

Post by ricercar.record » Thu Jul 13, 2017 7:18 am

Check out a new thing I've been working on and critique this live session mix so I can guilt myself into being like pretty decent at mixing live sessions. Cheers!

looked and sounded good. something with the hi-hat or snare (i couldn't figure it out) sounded off but i think it was the musicians drum/cymbal and not a mic/phase issue.

I'm not hearing it (went back and listened after your comment, Mark). The snare sounds beefy in the mids (or "a bit 'plastic-y' in producer-speak), and the hats are a bit "bright"/"chippy," but it doesn't sound radically out of the ordinary to me, and like you said, I think organic rather than a mix issue, if anything.

On a second listening with no picture (as I type this on another window screen), I'm really digging this mix (and the song, of course), which represents the tune nicely, "sounds like a live record," if that means anything, and really sounds good as a stand-alone (sometimes, "TV" mixes are pretty picture-proprietary, but this sounds great).

Good band, nice mix! Will have to look/listen for more shows!

thanks so much for the kind words! Was really happy with how it turned out and totally agree with the "sometimes TV mixes are pretty picture proprietary"... I was actually thinking about that while mixing and wanted to spend a little more time fine tuning some things in the mix to give it a proper mix feel like I would for a live record so it could stand on it's own as sounding professional even without the video, at least that's the goal of this whole thing. If you're interested in checking out more our youtube channel is Austin Uncharted and we'll be posting videos and full sessions every Thursday. The next song from King Warbler is already up, https://youtu.be/bO8QstZyyAs if you want to check that out, and we'll have the last one (probably my favorite) out next week.

Last one of these with King Warbler is out now and it's definitely my favorite song/performance of these three, https://youtu.be/dbjZENMiw0Q. They just killed it on this song and gave a really memorable performance. New full episode with a host and banter in between songs and what not with a noise rock-ish band called Youth Hospice is out tomorrow for anyone who wants to subscribe to our youtube and follow these things.

Good job. Live stuff is always a good challenge.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.
