New Record - recorded live, no headphones

Post by A.David.MacKinnon » Tue Oct 17, 2017 5:23 pm

I've finally released the record I've been tinkering with for ages. With the exception of two songs it was recorded live off the floor (vocals and all) without headphones. There are some horn and percussion overdubs but the meat and potatoes were all cut together. We used a pair of floor wedges and a small PA speaker to monitor the vocal. It works remarkably well (although spent a day on set-up and mic placement to make sure the bleed from each instrument and the PA would sound decent). This was my last session at my old 6 Nassau studio in Toronto. It was a big (30x30), roomy sounding room with no iso booths. We used gobos and let the rest bleed.

Have a listen and pass it on if you like it.

A. David!! Sounds great! Glad you came out of retirement.

Everything sounds just right and organic, but the roomy drum sound is exceptionally sweet.

It's amazing how when the vocal is cut live the bleed + vocal treatment (in this case Echoplex) creates the drum sound. Thankfully it all worked out. I tried retracking a few of the vocals but always went back to the live vocal takes. Even when they weren't technically better they were always better. Part of that was the effect of the bleed in the vocal mic but the bigger part was the sound of me not over-thinking the singing.
