Mix feedback needed - Stoner Rock / Heavy Psychedelic Rock

Post by Bungler » Sun Jun 24, 2018 10:02 am

Looking for some advice on this mix from my new band (Mojo Bozo's Electric Circus); our fist single off an upcoming LP. Going through some ups and downs with my personal opinion of it and currently getting a little in over my head, thus seeking some feedback. I am mixing this myself.

I won't mention my concerns so you won't have any bias. Let me know what you think.

Thanks in advance!

P.S. Mix is unmastered, no master bus limiting.

Listening on crap speakers:

The rhythm section comes across right away. Always a nice achievement to have a snare drum that is simultaneously very dark and very clear in the mix. Well done.

Some cool panning flourishes on the guitar. Vocal processing totally works. I like the space made for the guitar solo, and how the top end of the bass comes through when the rhythm guitar gets out of the way for the solo.

I think I'd have to listen over nicer speakers to see if I can find any suggestions for changes. On first listen it just kind of kicks ass.

On closed-back headphones:

Good "wall of sound" vibe, I think guitars (and maybe everything) could use a bit of midsy bite though. Cymbals sound a bit thin. Low end is very well balanced though, which is a must for this genre. Solo sounds great, and the flangerish effect after the solo really kicks things up a notch. Overall a really awesome mix, just needs some tonal balance. Doesn't sound out of place for stoner rock though, that stuff is always a bit dull-in-a-good-way.

Hi,

I also did not find the track... so I listened to the other one you got:

I find the drums are disconnected from the rest of the mix. Like you tried so hard to make the transients of the drums "punch through" your muddy mix, that yes you succeeded... Like a pencil right through a soggy piece of paper. I makes the vocal and guitar feel small and distant.

I think there is still a lot to do mix wise.

The song is cool.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

I'll translate this for you, OP:

"The song is gone, but I wanted to give my opinion on something so I chose this other one:
Drums poke out a little too much and the mix could use some work, but the song is cool!"
