Music recommendations - diversify my playlist

Post by kslight » Thu Nov 09, 2023 5:09 pm

For those that know, know, this year has been about a reset for me. And I feel like some new tunes would help. Especially to possibly reinspire me to make music. What great albums have I missed or forgotten, from big or unknown artists? Tape Op (the mag) has sometimes lead me down a great path musically, most recently with Beauty Pill.

I would say I am fairly genre agnostic, but I’m not a fan of pop country, modern rap / pop production styles, or spiritual music. But could be literally anything else. Has to be found on Apple Music.

I prefer albums not shuffle, so if you have a favorite artist give me the favorite album title also…

KRISTEEN YOUNG.

Tony Visconti has produced some of her music.

Super cool and different.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

check out Khruangbin. Tape Op even did a podcast on their album with Vieux Farka Toure, but the band on their own is pretty cool. I saw the band in Austin, but it's been a few years now.

This is a great suggestion, I started listening on the way home yesterday. In a way it reminds me of my business partner’s former band (dirty little rabbits) - key driven female fronted rock. Though DLR’s studio recordings never captured the energy of the band and were produced to death, imho.

I don't listen to a lot of whole albums from new artists these days, but some bands where I'd go for at least half an album:
Slow Pulp
Glintshake
Land of Talk (the new album is a little sleepy for my tastes though)
Yard Act (whom I sadly missed because I got the covid)
Wet Leg.
Dummy

Slow Dive's latest is ... Slow Dive
The Foo Fighters latest is really good in cans; they use rock songs and pop arrangements, with Cheap Trick (Grohl would say Beatles) influence
The Viagra Boys are hilarious, and they rock
The latest Bush is a tight band, some interesting arrangements, great voice, usual insipid lyrics
The Afghan Whigs latest is much like Twilight Singers, but heavier - some cool wall-of-sound mixes
The recent Joe Strummer/Mescaleros is my fave live album recently - does some great Clash songs, too
The Wilco double country, and the latest, are both good
Of course, Isbells' stuff is great - I been buyin' up the older stuff
As well, I'm very into Drive By Truckers, who just release a re-mastered Southern ...
Another great and also funny writer is James McMurtry
I liked the last Psych Furs record of a year or two ago
I'm lovin' the re-constituted Dream Syndicate
just got a limited- release live house solo performance of Steve Wynn offa bandcamp - I'm a pretty big fan of his stuff
There's a new live UFO out that's like 3 shows after their famous live one, a few new songs, Schenker is amazing
I recently bought Miles Davis' Nefertiti and am enjoying it
Peter Hook has done a cuppla live records with this band with his son, The Light - respectable Joy Division "covers"
I went back and listened to the Metallic-Lour reed collab; would been better as a single record, not as bad as ya might predict
the latest cuppla Neil Youngs are great, including two releases of older un-released stuff (Silverado, Chrome Dreams) but I especially enjoy the recent live record from the dry-run shows for The Ragged Glory tour
I bought one of those cheap box sets of Larry Graham - some great stuff, some schmaltz
the cheap P-Funk box is better
I keep goin' thru my Lanegan stuff (the Screaming Trees release of a year or two back rocks - Homme on second guitar)
Dino, Jr. is always good, a few boxes out now
the last cuppla Lucinda Williams are great, especially the black jacket one (the second latest)
the latest QOTSA is growing on me - Homme is such a weird writer
the Time Out of Mind box set (Fragments) is excellent, altho' I still like the original mixes
listening to the Who's Next box right now - terrific re-master so far
bandcamp;
blog.
I mix with olive juice.
