i use a metalbox 8008 kick drum module in frac rack modular synth format, it's $150 and you can get one here:

it's basically an exact replica of an 808 kick with modern components, but it also features a tune knob and outputs at modular levels - that's about 10 volts of goodness, enough to sting your tongue
it's the hugest thing i have ever heard.
